GARIOA / DIPLOMACY

山根 敏子

University of Vermont, 1950

Japan’s first woman diplomat

Yamane studied international relations through a GARIOA grant and later worked in diplomacy connected with Japan’s admission to the United Nations. A 2021 exhibition at the Tottori City History Museum documented her life through photographs and personal materials.

根岸 英一

University of Pennsylvania, 1960

From international study to the Nobel Prize

Negishi received the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on cross-coupling in organic synthesis. He delivered a keynote address to the next generation at the Fulbright Program’s 60th anniversary symposium in 2012.

Medicine and experience in a guide to wellbeing

Miki’s published work records his approach to health, the development of diabetes research and his study experience at the Joslin Diabetes Center affiliated with Harvard University.

椿 清文

Northwestern University, 1983

Reading culture through jazz

Tsubaki published a study of jazz and signifying and spoke on the subject in a 2021 public online seminar jointly presented by FAAJ and the Japan–United States Educational Exchange Promotion Foundation.

三木谷 良一を記念して

Harvard University, 1959

Carrying the value of study abroad into a scholarship

A 2021 donation made in memory of Ryoichi Mikitani established the Fulbright–Mikitani Memorial Scholarship and supported Japanese Fulbright graduate students.
